Meanwhile, your other friend enjoys a flaming hot chili which no one else at the table can touch. One person\u2019s food is another person\u2019s poison and indeed, everybody is unique!\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Ayurveda, the 5,000 year old \u2018science of life\u2019, your structure, function, tendencies and affinities are governed by what is called your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prakriti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or constitution.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning more about this empowers you to make optimal lifestyle choices that prevent disease and support overall wellbeing. This is crucial in today\u2019s day and age when 6 in 10 people in the US suffer from lifestyle based chronic illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and certain forms of cancer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Their incidence and the debilitating toll they take on our lives, and livelihood, can be reduced through preventative medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Prakriti: your Ayurvedic Constitution<\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prakriti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is your constitution or natural state at the time of conception, which is a combination of three energy principals called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Prakriti<\/em> is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unchanging through life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prakriti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inherently cannot be the cause of disease, though it could generate a propensity for certain disorders. Assessment of <em>Prakriti<\/em> is the first step in traditional Ayurvedic treatment as practiced in the Indian subcontinent, as it establishes what is a person&#8217;s unique &#8220;normal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prakriti is often known simply as &#8220;Dosha&#8221; and you might come across the question &#8211; &#8220;What&#8217;s your Dosha&#8221; To be accurate: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone has all three <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">present. Y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our constitution could <em>predominantly<\/em> consist of one <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or rarely, a balance of all three. Prakriti is also perceived as an Ayurvedic body type, though it also includes mental and emotional qualities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s explore each individual Dosha. It is cold, dry, light, mobile, irregular and rough. If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predominates you are likely to be either very petite or very tall (think: extremes), with dry skin and sensitivity to cold and dry weather. Your sleep may be light and restless. You could be active, enthusiastic, open-minded and creative, but your energy levels may be variable. It is a hot, oily, light, liquid, sharp, soft and smooth principal. You have a robust appetite, could get irritable if you skip meals. You have light but good sleep. You are bright and intellectual but could be excessively competitive and argumentative. She worked for over a decade in companies like Unilever and taught at a business school.<br \/><br \/>\r\n\r\nShe is a prolific writer who has written over 100 articles about Ayurveda, sustainability and other subjects close to her heart for Kerala Ayurveda, Art of Living, and Sri Sri Tattva. She has also written a book on environmental issues for teens in India, <em>The Green Dragon<\/em>, and stories for the <em>Chicken Soup for the Soul<\/em> series. Stay tuned for her debut Ayurvedic publication in 2024.<br \/><br \/>\r\n\r\nAnu volunteers with Project Welcome Home Troops, Art of Living, IAHV, WWF, BSA and has served NAMA\u2019s DEI committee. She feels strongly about social justice causes and is on the Board of her local PFLAG Chapter.
