The past year, many people experienced increased worry about their health, jobs and their loved ones. Many have suffered from loneliness or lack of space in relationships, and are continually anxious about the economy and how the future will unfold. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest data reveals staggering spikes in anxiety, depression, substance use, drug overdose and suicide rate. A recent survey by the CDC\u00a0 on adult mental health found that more than 40% of U.S. adults have reported at least one mental health issue during this pandemic, and more than 1 in 10 adults had seriously considered suicide. During this period, 7 out of 10 young adults (18-24 years old) reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and more than 25% have seriously considered suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What better time to talk about Ayurveda and mental health?! Vaidya. Jayarajan Kodikannath, Director of Kerala Ayurveda USA addressed this in a \u201cWednesday Wisdom\u201d Facebook live session with the insight that <\/span><b>stress is our own internal response to circumstances outside of us.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There was an outpouring of concerns participants shared, from loneliness to extended media time, insomnia, anxiety, food cravings and worries about the future. The minute Sam sits across from him, he bursts into tears. His Vaidya very kindly reassures him, \u201cDon\u2019t worry, you\u2019ve revealed what is bothering you.\u201d Sam has an anxiety diagnosis from his therapist, and his Vaidya has observed how this is linked to his other symptoms as a severe imbalance of the Vata Dosha, or air and ether energy principle. He has the typical expressions: the allergies and asthma, which his mom has observed; additionally, he experiences sensitivity, random aches and pains, restlessness, sleep issues and spacey dreams. After a protocol of Vata management, not only do Sam\u2019s asthma symptoms improve but his anxiety reduces, and he grows in confidence.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Mind and body: it&#8217;s all the same<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayurveda defines health as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swasthya <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(being balanced in the self), enumerated in the root text, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sushruta Samhita <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as:<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sama Dosha Sama Agnischa Sama Dhatu Mala Kriyaha |\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h6>\n<h6><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prasanna Atma Indirya Manaha Swastha Iti Abhideyate ||<\/span><\/i><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health is a state of equilibrium of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(energy principals)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Agni <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(digestive and metabolic fire),\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dhatus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tissues), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malas (<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excretion)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and homoeostasis involving a blissful state of spirit, sense organs and mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayurveda is a holistic science that clearly acknowledges the mind-body correlation. Ayurvedic mental health management <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Manas Shastra)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focuses on prevention through gentle, natural, effective and long lasting means to reduce the tendency of recurrence. Its healing methods promote higher self awareness, balance in the body and contentment in the mind. Psychiatric ailments are clubbed under <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnmada.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayurveda does not stigmatize mental health and every Ayurvedic intake delves into a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sattva Pariksha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or mental analysis as part of the classical <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dasvidha Pareeksha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or ten fold wellness assessment. It has its role: it enables us to sleep and be restful. In an imbalanced state, it can lead to depression or serious psychological disorders such as suicidal tendencies, in which case one must seek professional help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Rajas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is at the opposite scale of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, characterized by activity and pursuing one\u2019s passion. Extreme <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads to physical restlessness and an inability to relax. In a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajasic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state, you could be bombarded with thoughts and exhibit impatience, indecisiveness, irritability, anger and aggression. In a pathological state, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like violence towards the self while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be equated with violence towards the outside world.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Sattva<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You can\u2019t live devoid of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is needed to rest and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is needed to act. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sattva <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the natural state of the mind in balance; a pure, clear quality of the mind that enables you to relax, be in harmony and feel cheerful while giving your 100% effort in getting things done. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sattva<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> endows us with good mental health, happiness and wisdom.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Doshas<\/i><\/b><b> and mental health\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three energies that influence the structure, function, tendencies and affinities of the body are called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and our unique body constitution or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prakriti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a combination of these. It is determined at the time of conception and while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can change, our basic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prakriti <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not. When <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in balance, the mind is balanced and pleasant. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> personality people tend to be creative and imaginative; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-dominant people are intellectual, analytical and motivated; and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kapha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> personality is nurturing and loving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person with Vata dominating would typically have the brilliant, creative idea to commence a startup, a Pitta person would have the fire to implement the idea and lead the company, and a Kapha person would nurture and hold the stable ground to maintain and keep it going as a steady business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vikriti <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or imbalance in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impacts the mind or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manovaha Srotas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(body channel responsible for mental function). Here are some typical expressions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Vata <\/i><\/b><b>imbalance<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manifests as restlessness, fear, anxiety and loss of focus; faith and grounding are an antidote.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Pitta <\/i><\/b><b>imbalance<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manifests as anger and irritability and showing compassion and letting go of judgements are an antidote.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Kapha <\/i><\/b><b>imbalance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manifests as lethargy and depression and valor and non-attachment are key to letting go.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, when the mind is in a state of imbalance, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doshas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can go out of balance. For instance, if you encounter grief and fear, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vata Dosha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could go out of balance. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vata <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pacifying protocol would involve utilizing a routine, nurturing practices, unctuous warm food with sweet, sour and salty tastes in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadrasa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (six tastes according to Ayurveda), warming spices, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abhyanga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (self massage), light, restorative yoga and meditation. Cut yourself some slack; awareness of the factors at play helps restore balance.\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than a genetic propensity, the same factors that cause disease at the physical level impact mental health, but one that we pay particular attention to is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prajnapradha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Parinama <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; time<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The external environment impacts diseases, like an extreme variation in temperature. Awareness of these factors helps in restoring balance, for instance following <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritucharya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guidelines to balance Vata during fall would help with conditions like anxiety, insomnia and focus-related issues that are linked to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vata <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and could get aggravated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Asathmya Indriyartha samyoga <\/i><\/b> &#8211; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missuse of senses<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improper and excessive utilization of the sense organs results in under- or overstimulation of senses, which can harm our mind-body complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Prajnaparadha <\/i><\/b>&#8211; a<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n insult to the intellect<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the main cause of mental disorders\u00a0 (caused by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in which we knowingly indulge in wrong speech, actions and thoughts. This involves <\/span><b><i>Dhi <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(intellect), <\/span><b><i>Dhrti <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(will power) and <\/span><b><i>Smriti <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(memory) going out of balance. These are the working parts of the brain, and if they\u2019re in order, we make good decisions that nurture better physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><i>Ojas<\/i>, immunity, and mental health<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthening <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyadhikamatvam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or immunity, is correlated with<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is overall vitality and strength, including mental health. Boosting mental health also has a positive impact on immunity and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the essence of all the bodily tissues and the ultimate resort of both our nutrition and our genetic inborn strength. Depleted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impacts mental health, and psychological factors like grief or anxiety could trigger a depletion in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and immune resistance. A paper on the \u201cPublic Health Approach of Ayurveda and Yoga for COVID-19 Prophylaxis\u201d discusses that the\u00a0 concept of stimulating immune function is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic practice in an integrative approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study emphasizes that psychological distress is a common response to the COVID-19 outbreak, which may affect the immune response to respiratory infections. It points out two scientific models corroborating Ayurveda\u2019s efficacy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence of the link between nervous, endocrine and immune systems; stress and emotional disorders can modulate the immune response in infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychoneuroimmunology and the &#8216;meaning response&#8217; &#8211; what effect does a treatment that works via a non-conventional &#8216;scientific&#8217; paradigm have, through the meaning ascribed to it. She worked for over a decade in companies like Unilever and taught at a business school.<br \/><br \/>\r\n\r\nShe is a prolific writer who has written over 100 articles about Ayurveda, sustainability and other subjects close to her heart for Kerala Ayurveda, Art of Living, and Sri Sri Tattva. She has also written a book on environmental issues for teens in India, <em>The Green Dragon<\/em>, and stories for the <em>Chicken Soup for the Soul<\/em> series. Stay tuned for her debut Ayurvedic publication in 2024.<br \/><br \/>\r\n\r\nAnu volunteers with Project Welcome Home Troops, Art of Living, IAHV, WWF, BSA and has served NAMA\u2019s DEI committee. She feels strongly about social justice causes and is on the Board of her local PFLAG Chapter.
